Tom Altenburg was born and raised in the Kansas City area. Growing up with three brothers, he spent a lot of time camping, hiking, and enjoying the natural beauty of the state of Missouri. Exploring the outdoors with his friends is one of his fondest memories from childhood. Tom began drawing as a young child, and during his school years, he excelled in art and drawing classes. Later, he went on to receive a degree in Studio Art and Design at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He also studied at the Kansas City Art Institute. While in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, he received training as an artist and graphic designer. Tom currently works as a designer at Hallmark Cards, Inc. |

Tom has received local, regional and national awards for his fine art and design work. In 2004, one of his paintings was exhibited in the Birds in Art Exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin. Tom will be featured on “Missouri Outdoors,” the television program produced by the Missouri Department of Conservation, which will air in early 2006. He was also featured in Acrylic Highlights, an American Artist Magazine, October 2004. Two of his paintings were selected for exhibit in the Arts for the Parks 2002 Mini 50 competition. He had a painting selected for the Top 200 competition in 2004. In 2001, Tom won the M. Graham Award in the National Oil and Acrylic Painter’s Society national art competition. He was also awarded a best of show at the 1999 Treasures of Nature Art Show (National Wildlife Art Show) sponsored by Ducks Unlimited.
