Shelby started
carving miniature waterfowl decoys in the early 1980's from scraps of
white pine left over from other projects in his extensive wood working
shop. Encouraged by friends who saw the work, he continued to study
the techniques of other carvers and to take classes with noted carvers
like Jim Sprankle and Bob Guggi. He was one of the first woodcarvers
selected for inclusion in "Best of Missouri Hands," a catalog
of Missouri artisans published by the University of Missouri.

His connection with Missouri forests and wood has been life-long, imparting a knowledge of wood species and their characteristics second to none. Likewise, his lifetime pursuits of hunting and fishing opportunities throughout the U.S. have contributed to knowledge of the biology, natural appearance, and habits of the waterfowl, mammals, and fish that he recreates in his woodcarvings.
